Translation of love

Valentine’s day is celebrated all over the world and in many weird and wonderful ways. The diversity of traditions and myths surrounding the date are steeped in the culture and traditions of many countries – some have been marking the day for centuries, while others have only recently begun to celebrate the occasion.

Japan, for example, was one of the countries who have only recently taken up the idea of Valentines day, but due to a translation error made by one Japanese chocolate company, only Japanese women buy chocolates for the partners, boyfriends or friends! It is the only day of the year where women will reveal their interest in a potential partner by giving him chocolate. But the ladies in question then have an agonising wait until March 14th, which is called White Day, to see if their feelings are requited.

At Translation Blog, we thought it would be bit of fun to show the cultural and linguistic differences that are about to be celebrated the following infographic has been put together for you amusement; Enjoy, and Happy Valentine’s.
